The thalamus, in the centre of this brain drawing, which centre acts as a relay station, all incoming information is received. It then passes information on to either the rational brain (the green arrows) all over on the borders of the brain drawing. Or it passes this on, along the red arrow, to the emotional centres. Wherever they are stored in the boddy. 

Important is to note, that the route to the emotional brain part (down right from that centre) is shorter and quicker than the route via the rational brain. So emotional responses can be more immediate, i.e. experienced first. Finer tuning of feelings and understanding of emotions comes via the rational connections to the emotional brain. In normal circumstances these two centres work in harmony, to decide on actions and responses.
